The Alexander 3
This year has taught me that life is a precious gift from God,  so live every moment as if its your last, count your blessings and put Him above all else. I could not have made it through without the love and support of so many people. To each of you that has touched my life thank you. Know that each of you is an angel on my shoulder reminding me of the greater importance in life. I'm not making resolution or intention this year, and I have no idea what 2014 will bring and for the first time in my life I am ok with it. God has a way and a plan and I will live for that.
God Bless and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas To All

Wishing you all a safe and merry Christmas.
I am off to Ohio! Tell you all about it when I get back!

'Twas the Night Before the Night Before Christmas

and all through my house.... all my puppies were stirring, but luckily no mouse (amen!). The stocking were hung, above the TV with care, in hope that St. Nicolas would please just ring the doorbell when he came near.

Happy Monday ya'll. Just one day left before the merriment that is Christmas. I wanted to take a minute to thank you all for a wonderful year. I honestly could not have made it through this year without all your love and support. It still amazes me that this year with all the hardship, heartbreak and change I have made lasting friendships IRL and Blog, strengthened friendships I had before, and renewed my journey with Christ.

This year is proof that the Lord works in mysterious ways. He knows what you need and will provide when the time is right. He gave us His only son, so that we could.  Remember that this week as we see family and friends, as we get lost amidst the ribbon and bows and mounds of food and fellowship. Christ is our savior. No amount of presents or food can affix itself in the Christ-shaped hole in our hearts. I am so blessed that I have seen His power and glory at work this year and pray the same for each of you.

“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government
and of peace there will be no end…”

Christmas Confessions

It's Friday and well this Friday could not come quick enough. With Christmas looming, I thought I would share a few Christmas Confessions... So Don't tell Santa, but...

I confess....

  • I have not wrapped a single present (ok I threw one of le guy's into a bag)
  • I almost returned all of le guy's presents because, I, on momentary panic thought he may hate them all and they were not creative or thoughtful enough
  • I did not in fact return them after venturing out last night and seeing the lines and lack thereof creative gifts
  • I shopped for myself last night... Gap and I had it going on (hello 40% off)
  • I will be meeting le guy's family in t-minus 5 days and I am freaking out! All these what if's pop in my head and then I have scary dreams about crazy things I might do or say....
  • I sent M a Christmas card. I know, I know, but seriously first Christmas without him in 8 years, it was hard and well it was so darn cute!
  • I have eaten my weight in coconut cookies. I have somehow convinced myself they are healthy, cause duh, coconut is totally a health food.... and I mean I did use splenda and spelt flour...
  • I put up a tree and such, and have not turned on the lights in like 4 days...hey its up right?
  • I opened a Christmas card addressed to the people who used to own my house and literally laughed out loud at the picture.. I mean who puts that picture of their kids on a card? it was just so bad. (p.s. also don't tell the police I tampered with mail or the feds whoever controls that)
  • My office is open Christmas Eve (yes you heard me correctly), my family is celebrating Christmas Eve day... hmmm two Lynns? or one thing has to suffer?
  • I think putting bows & ribbons on packages is kinda a waste of time... I mean they just ripped off... though our family saves them & some of the bows and boxes have been around for going on 12+ years now
  • I am a tad jealous of everyone that has gotten engaged  shout out to Neely & A!!! Congrats!!!!
Have a wonderful week all. Get all that last minute shopping done. I am going to see the Nutcracker at Bass Hall with my girlfriends! So excited to start this tradition.

When It Rains

It pours... and wow has it poured buckets as of late. See, in my head, I am Holly Homemaker, Ms. Perfect and Martha Stewart all rolled into one (minus the insider trading part). Oh, did I mention, I am also super lawyer, best friend and devout too? Well, somewhere in there, the universe decided to rain on my parade.

So, let's go back.... I had been craving a nice roast for dinner for a couple weeks. It happened after lunch with my brother and nephew a couple weeks back at Cotton Patch Café. I love their post roast and decided I needed to give it a whirl again. So, I got all the stuff during my Sunday shopping and put it all in the crock pot Tuesday morning and set about my day. I could just smell it on my way home last night. And then I stepped into the house to the aroma of... stale dog and air. I rushed to my crock pot only to see it had turned off. I had no idea how long it cooked or didn't cook. There goes dinner! I set it on high for 2 hours hoping it would cook. I did my HIIT workout, which I was so excited to share with you all today and then decided to do some laundry.

I put in the towels and sat down to watch a little SVU until the roast was ready and le guy arrived. That's when it happened. I heard this strange sound coming from my washing machine. Darn thing must have gotten unbalanced. Nope, no sir. It was leaking and by leaking I mean gushing gallons of water onto my floor. I turned it off and set to mopping up the water with the one towel I  had since yeah I was washing towels... Meanwhile le guy arrives and we survey the damage. We turn it back on so we can see where the water is coming from and then it gushes again. But this time, can't get it off. Water is just  hoover damming it way all over my laundry room and into my kitchen. Finally le guy pulls the plug. water.... water... water.... we set to mopping up water and ringing out towels for the next 30 minutes or so. When we finally got it mopped up, the roast.... still not done.

I was done. I lost it. I mean all out 2 year old tears of a temper tantrum. Between work, holidays, the house trying to kill me and dinner imploding I had enough! Now I was pouring.

So, my Christmas list, well it now consists of one plumber, one roofer, one drywall hanger and oh did I mention the cracks in my wall?

I turned the roast to low and let it cook a couple more hours. It appears done this morning and I guess I'll have roast for lunch and dinner. What I won't be doing, is shopping any.time.soon.

Here's to the grown up world... and to the roast!

Playing the Christmas Game

I had a moment in church today. It had been a couple weeks since I had been due to work, icemaggedon and such. I realized it had been a month since my last Redemption Group meeting. I had been going through the motions for the last month or so. I was tired, confused, angry, exhausted and honestly, just kind of "over" it all.

Its so easy to get this way, apathetic and vaguely Christian. Part of it stems from the grueling 10 weeks of RG and reliving every moment of the past 10 months of my life over and over again; part of it stems from not wanting to give up what I know I should and lay down for what I know is right; and part stems from the hustle and bustle that has been my life as of late. So, as I sat there listening, I realized our pastor was speaking to me. My hardened, cold heart was much like the Disciples in Mark when they again asked what they were to eat with only one loaf. I have seen the Lord do so much in life the past 10 months, yet when I was tired and no longer wanted to listen I turned away. Did He? Did He turn His back? No. He never left the Israelites side as He led them out of Egypt, yet I did when other things got in the way.

I think this time of year its easy to lose sight of what it's all about. We get tied up with buying the perfect gift for everyone on our list, getting the Christmas cards out and to everyone who sends us one, to attending all the parties and baking the perfect treat. Have we decorated just right? Have we the best meal planned; plotted out how to see everyone that day.... Its exhausting. Its so much and yet, every year we all indulge in this game of "Christmas."

When I got home I reflected a lot on this. Am I guilty of playing the game? of engaging in feel theology and vague Christianity? Duh! We all are. But what have I done to change this? What have I done to truly thank Him and show my gratitude for all the blessings in my life? I sat down on my couch and began to cry. I cried for the past year of my life, for M, for my future and for forsaking Him when I should have been turning towards Him. The tears turned into sobs and the sobs gave way to pleading and then into prayer.

I am by now means perfect, nor the perfect example of the Christian life, but I am trying. I made a list of all the things that I needed to reprioritize and then slept. I realized I had been so exhausted from trying to keep up with the Game, that I had neglected what was important: myself and Him.

So, today, thing about "the reason for the season." Stop playing the game for a moment and reflect on why we do it. Commit yourself again to putting what is right first and know that even if you do or don't tie the perfect ribbon upon your gifts, if its not done for His glory, it means nothing.

I leave you with a quite by C.S. Lewis our pastor shared with us:

"The Christian way is different: harder, and easier. Christ says “Give me All. I don’t want so much of your time and so much of your money and so much of your work: I want You. I have not come to torment your natural self, but to kill it. No half-measures are any good. I don’t want to cut off a branch here and a branch there, I want to have the whole tree down. I don’t want to drill the tooth, or ...crown it, or stop it, but to have it out. Hand over the whole natural self, all the desires which you think innocent as well as the ones you think wicked—the whole outfit. I will give you a new self instead. In fact, I will give you Myself: my own will shall become yours.”

It is both harder and easier than what we are all trying to do. You have noticed, I expect, that Christ Himself sometimes describes the Christian way as very hard, sometimes as very easy. He says, “Take up your Cross”—in other words, it is like going to be beaten to death in a concentration camp. Next minute he says, “My yoke is easy and my burden light.” He means both.” - CS Lewis

5 on Friday

TGIF!! This week has seemed like an eternity! Perhaps it was the end of icemagdedon or the anticipation of Christmas or that I'm just so over this year, but I am so ready for the weekend! So, link up and let's see what 5 things have me going this week!

1) My little family - I mean who can resist those furry faces? You know when they wake you up at 5 to pee or just snuggle closer when its cold? These girls are my loves, always.

2) That in less than 2 weeks, I will have celebrated my first Christmas away from home. Yup, I am heading n
orthward to spend this holiday with the snowflakes of Ohio!

3) I'll take 46 over 26 any day of the week....

4) I have had a rough couple weeks with work and life and my house with no heat... so today I am treating myself to a much-needed massage. If you need me after 5pm I'll be relaxing away!

5) The topknot - I have been trying to master this for about 6 months now. This is not a great picture, but I have layered hair and all the little whispy pieces fall out all the time... I finally got it all up this morning and not looking like a tiny donut hole! I feel very Audrey today with my turtleneck, crop pants, topknot...

What's got you going this Friday?

Workout Rut

I was at the doctor's office last week for a routine check-up and had to get on the dreaded scale. I took off my shoes, but honestly I wanted to shed every ounce of clothing and scream, I swear I weigh less than that.... Ekk, I about died inside when I saw that number.

Ok, so I know what you are thinking--why on earth is she talking about weight, much less losing any? Well, because I am a normal, 31 year old woman who still longs to have her 24 year old, Miss Texas body back! Truth, is, I know I am not fat, I am far from it and I know that. However, I do not think there is anything wrong with having goals (even in the weight department) and working to achieve them. Some facts: I do not own a scale at home ( I was rather obsessed before and so when I moved I didn't bring it); I work out 5 days a week; I do not eat fried foods; I stick to a pretty healthy diet; and I do not drink very often. Yes, I let myself have more sweets and bad for me food than I did, let's say 2 years ago... but I realized life was too short and tasteless without sugar and some grease every now and then. But, I have noticed that after 30 things slowed down and widened. Clothes that had room in the hips now are snug and not because I weigh a ton more, but because my body is changing. I could crash diet and starve myself, I could amp up the gym, but the truth is, my workouts are pretty intense... so why no weight loss? I'm in a rut!

Yup, my body can predict, know and sense what to do with each workout. So, I decided it was time for a change. Instead of my typical 40 minutes of cardio, abs then weights, I have changed Tuesday to a circuit workout. I find them everywhere and then end with some abs and about 10 minutes on the elliptical. I add in some Insanity DVD's at least once a week for short, but grueling workouts. Hot yoga? Yup! Texas winters are normally (cough cough, not this week) pretty mild so adding in some sprints and long runs with cooler temps is awesome too. I am hoping these small changes can get my butt in gear and help me stay on top of it come January 2014!

Heck, 2013 has been my year of change, so why not change my workouts too? What workouts do you love? Share and share alike!

The Ex

So what do you do when you have a busy day at work and need to relieve stress? Gym.... yup, a good workout to get it all out. So, I get home, change clothes, let the pups out to slide around the ice in the backyard and try not to freeze my tookus off (yeah only 59 degrees in my house).... and head to the gym.

I was super pumped to do a new circuit workout that the lovely Mrs. K posted to her instagram so I headed up to the small space on the gym and set to work. Then I looked up and saw....the ex....in the gym heading towards me... of all the space in the gym the ex had to come to my lil space where I am engaging in a much-needed sweat 'sesh.

I averted my eyes, but lord you know how hard it is... to not look, gawk, stare, and then wonder why said ex has not said a thing to you. Do I look different, am I hard to recognize? Maybe that's it.... Perhaps I was mistaken and its not the ex. No, I am pretty darn sure it is.

I continue my workout, meanwhile using my peripheral vision to scope the ex out after every move. Its just so awkward... its killing me! How long will the tension and backward glances last? Finally, I am at my breaking point. I have finished my last circuit (and sweating to death might I add, so perfect time to say something right?) I walk over to the ex and engage. It went something like this:

Me: Hey Ex.

Ex: Lynn, right?

Me: Yeah. I just wanted to come over and say hi. I mean we have a lot of mutual friends and I hate awkward situation, so I hope that there are no hard feelings or such.

Ex: No, not at all. I was pretty sure that was you, but I wasn't. But no.

Me: Oh, good. I am so glad.

....

We exchanged a few more pleasantries and then she walked away. I finished my cardio and abs and headed down to see le guy. I told him about the talk. I don't think he was mad, and actually think it made him feel better that I said something. Truth is, we do have mutual friends and have seen each other out and have been in the same group of people, out. I just decided to put on my big girl panties and break the ice so to speak. Will we be best friends and have wine nights, no, but at least we can perhaps co-exist in the same small town that Fort Worth is and not make everyone feel so uncomfortable, especially, le guy.

Did I have ya'll on pins and needles? Did you think I saw M at the gym and he ignored me? Lol... Now, that would be awkward.

In other news, I have started to receive Christmas cards and oh I love it! I keep them every year and its fun to watch families grow and friends change. Shout out to my blog bestie and her cute card hey P!inky and my Dallasite Neely and uber cute card too! Love ya'll so much.

Icemageddon 2013

I know I have not blogged in like a couple days.... and I have very good reason. I had mediation Wednesday til late, and Thursday, followed by the beginning of icemageddon Thursday night. So, there I was driving home from my photoshoot for Fort Worth's Most Beautiful Women and was being pelted by sleet. Yes, sleet, coming at my every which way. I finally made it home, bouffant hair and all. I coaxed the dogs out and then bundled up for bed in hopes of something warmer the next day. No dice people, no dice.

I woke up Friday to this: (don't mind the creepy house across the street)

And to my heater that pooped out, as in would not get above 55 in my house... Yeah, 55 inside 30 outside, gee golly it was grand! So, we braved the ice and headed to a place with heat! And our weekend looked like this:

chicken chili

puppies in clothes!

napping

cozy socks

a trip to mmm's office Saturday so she could work

snuggling

more napping

We also, slipped on the ice about 3 times taking the girls out, Sophie decided she didn't want to hold it until the "grass" and pooped on the driveway and Chloe would only go on the only spot of uniced grass... It was life for death taking these two out. And we went stir crazy!! Finally, Saturday I needed to get out and get stuff from the office. So... le guy drove us (and by us  mean Me, and Chloe and Sophie). We grabbed some work, then headed to check on my house and hit the gym. We needed to move out limbs! It was all dandy until we made the stupid decision to take the bridge shortcut to my house and slid all the way down.... I think I prayed more in 5 minutes than in my whole life! We took the better way home.

And then we were in the count. We watched TV, ran around the coffee table, played fetch, napped... Basically the girls did nothing. Mommy, err I mean, I managed to get some good work done and only slightly annoy le guy. (he was probably ready to get the girls out of his house).

And then we finally came home Sunday. Played outside in the snow and hit the gym up again.

downtown Fort Worth

And then had mexican food, along with everyone else in the Fort who needed out of the house. Mi Cocina was packed! I was informed the office is closed again tomorrow, but I will make the trek because I 1) have work to do and 2) need OUT OF THE HOUSE!.

So, hope you all had a great week and weekend and I am happy for the end of Icemageddon 2013. And just for a sneak peak... the girls and I are excited for our Christmas cards this year.... !!
