Workout Rut

I was at the doctor's office last week for a routine check-up and had to get on the dreaded scale. I took off my shoes, but honestly I wanted to shed every ounce of clothing and scream, I swear I weigh less than that.... Ekk, I about died inside when I saw that number.

Ok, so I know what you are thinking--why on earth is she talking about weight, much less losing any? Well, because I am a normal, 31 year old woman who still longs to have her 24 year old, Miss Texas body back! Truth, is, I know I am not fat, I am far from it and I know that. However, I do not think there is anything wrong with having goals (even in the weight department) and working to achieve them. Some facts: I do not own a scale at home ( I was rather obsessed before and so when I moved I didn't bring it); I work out 5 days a week; I do not eat fried foods; I stick to a pretty healthy diet; and I do not drink very often. Yes, I let myself have more sweets and bad for me food than I did, let's say 2 years ago... but I realized life was too short and tasteless without sugar and some grease every now and then. But, I have noticed that after 30 things slowed down and widened. Clothes that had room in the hips now are snug and not because I weigh a ton more, but because my body is changing. I could crash diet and starve myself, I could amp up the gym, but the truth is, my workouts are pretty intense... so why no weight loss? I'm in a rut!

Yup, my body can predict, know and sense what to do with each workout. So, I decided it was time for a change. Instead of my typical 40 minutes of cardio, abs then weights, I have changed Tuesday to a circuit workout. I find them everywhere and then end with some abs and about 10 minutes on the elliptical. I add in some Insanity DVD's at least once a week for short, but grueling workouts. Hot yoga? Yup! Texas winters are normally (cough cough, not this week) pretty mild so adding in some sprints and long runs with cooler temps is awesome too. I am hoping these small changes can get my butt in gear and help me stay on top of it come January 2014!

Heck, 2013 has been my year of change, so why not change my workouts too? What workouts do you love? Share and share alike!

  1. I think your body definitely slows down after 30, unfortunately. And Im totally with you--I'm not fat, but I definitely see areas of improvement for myself (that others wouldn't see most likely).
It sounds like your body needed a change up, so I think your changes are going to help!

  2. I think you're already on the right tracking, changing things up now. I'd say throw in some HIIT during the week too, for blasts of cardio and if your gym does body pump or zumba try those too.

    Getting older stinks huh :(

  3. Changing it up is totally the best plan!! I definitely plan on doing the same. I ran all. summer. long. but now that it's too cold I'm looking forward to changing it up each week at the gym!
And girl, I always take 5 pounds off because of my clothes ;) They just use such heavy material these days when making our jeans and bras, ha!

  4. You're gorgeous, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with having goals! I'm at a lower number on the scale now than I was before I was pregnant, but am not happy with my overall body tone. So, that's what I want to work on. I will be right there with you, working on changing up my routine to try to tone up and stay in shape!:)

And totally agree - what's life without a little sugar and grease every now and then!?!:)
