Owning a House

Yeah, I had heard the infamous " house poor" woes of people growing up. I heard whispers of taxes, upkeep and your AC going out. But, growing up, we never owned a home. In fact, I only recall one house we lived in and it was a rental. And when M and I were married, I didn't worry about house things. He just took care of it. So, fast forward and 31 year old, single me is just now learning the woes of owning a home. There are just so many things no one tells you. Like:

1. you have to water the yard, and by hand when you have no sprinkler system (and no one tells you to look for that when looking at home)

2. old windows - seek the electricity right out of you

3. make sure you attic is insulated

4. mice, rats, rodents, etc... will come inside for warmth, shelter, food

5. pier and beems homes move, shift and make your walls crack, and cause your doors to not shut or just come wide open

6. your dogs will dig in everything

7. don't plant anything you don't want to water

8. you need to maintain your lawn and its not cheap (hello mowing, weed eating, weed & feed, fertilizer, etc...)

9. pest control is not cheap unless you want every big imaginable

10. TAXES

11. taking the trash out to the curb and then hauling it back in, rain, sleet or 112 degree heat

12. when things break, there is no landlord to call, its me!

13. my house has 9 different types of light bulbs

14. when the ac/heat goes out, and you are poor, cover up, immensely!

15. no one will feel bad for you because they own their own homes too and have "been there, done that

16. you can't just move out, or up and sell it

17. but, at the end of the day its all my own.

  2. I know it can be a challenge...and some days it seems not worth it, but you have a home over your head that YOU did yourself, and that's pretty awesome :)

  3. Such a cute house!! I always say I'd rather have a house over an apartment, but you're right - there's so much more responsibility that comes with it!

  5. What an adorable house! I love it! We've been in our house for a year now, and it definitely drains your bank account. But I would choose that over an apartment any day. ;)

I am so happy I have one, but truth be told, I am so looking forward to selling it. Ha.

  7. B and I know all about the 'joys' of owning an old home. Critters, wall cracks, poor insulation and more. Right there with ya, sweet girl. And you are RIGHT. It's a lot of work. But, be proud of yourself because real estate is a sound investment. Hopefully, if/when you do decide to move or sell, you will be able to make some money off of it (especially with the work and money you've put in to update already!) You are a wise woman, and it's amazing that you bought your own home!:)
